GETTING TO THE STADIUM OF LIGHT
BY CAR
Take the Durham/Sunderland exit from Junction 62 of the A1 and follow the A690 towards Sunderland. After about eight miles, turn left at the roundabout and join the A19 (Tyne Tunnel). Remain in the left hand land and take the second slip road towards Sunderland (following signs for the Stadium of the Light, A1231 Sunderland). Cross the bridge over the River Wear and turn right on the A1231.
Continue straight over four roundabouts into Sunderland and through two sets of traffic lights – ensuring you head straight on towards Roker instead of the city centre and, approximately a mile after the traffic lights, the Stadium of Light car park will be on your right.
Fulham fans should note that there is extremely limited parking at the Stadium of Light and the surrounding residential streets are part of a strictly enforced residents’ parking zone. Drivers can park at the Stadium of Light Metro station (£4), at the Sunderland Enterprise Park park and ride scheme off the A1231 or at the Wearmouth Colliery Welfare (see our away pubs section below) for free.
BY TRAIN
Sunderland is the nearest main line station, located 10-15 minutes’ walk away in the city centre (walking directions here). Fulham fans should be aware that there is a very limited train service planned for this weekend. For journey planning and other rail information, visit National Rail.
BY METRO
The Tyne and Wear Metro serves the Stadium via both Stadium of Light and St Peter’s stations. After matches, fans travelling towards South Hylton must board at St Peter’s, while those heading northbound towards Newcastle must use Stadium of Light station. Visit Nexus for more information on Metro, including journey planning.
BY BUS
Bus numbers 3, 4, 13, 35, 35A and 56 all stop nearby. The city’s main bus station, Park Lane Interchange, is within walking distance of the stadium.
AWAY PUBS
Two social clubs within a five minute walk of the Stadium of Light enthusiastically welcome away fans. Both The Sunderland Companions Club (39-41 North Bridge Street, SR5 1AH) and The New Democratic Club (34 North Bridge Street, SR5 1AH) get very busy on a matchday but they are exceptionally friendly venues offering an excellent selection of low-priced ales.
The Albion (Victor Street, SR6 0EN) is a five minute walk from the Stadium of Light and welcomes visiting fans – often laying on some snacks. The Colliery Tavern (12 Southwick Road, SR5 1EQ) has also previously enthusiastically welcomed Fulham fans and has very reasonably priced food.
The Wearmouth Colliery Welfare (Thompson Road, SR5 2SD) has reached out to the Trust to advise us that they are situated within ten minutes walk of the away entrance and as well as providing free parking their most expensive pint is priced at a remarkable £3.09.
The Harbour View (1 Benedict Road, SR6 0NX) might be further away from the Stadium of Light but does offer breathtaking views of the coast and superb real ale, good food and big screen televisions.
Alternatively, the nearest Wetherspoons option is The William Jamieson (30-32 Fawcett Street, SR1 1RH) in Sunderland which gets very busy, but they do employ extra staff on a matchday to keep waiting times down.
Alcohol is available in the stadium with Carling lager (£4), Carling cider (£3.80), Worthington’s (£3.80), a wide array of wines (£3.90) as well as two pies and pints for £12.
Fulham fans may find Sunderland’s official away day guide informative – including the fact that coins, powerbanks and other items are not prohibited in the away end.
