An accessible Putney Bridge Station has moved a step closer today after Transport for London agreed to undertake a detailed feasibility study on making Craven Cottage’s closest underground station step free.

Fulham’s Disabled Supporters Association and the Trust have long campaigned for step-free access to Putney Bridge station – with campaigners Miriam Busani and Geoffrey Hardwick raising the matter with Chelsea and Fulham Member of Parliament Ben Coleman.

Mr. Coleman confirmed this afternoon that this important campaign had made a massive breakthrough. Writing to his constituents, the Member of Parliament said:

“Since becoming your MP, I’ve been campaigning alongside residents for Putney Bridge Station to be made step free and truly accessible to everyone. The stairs are a nightmare for people who are older, disabled or travelling with buggies and luggage.

I’m delighted to tell you that we’ve won a breakthrough. Transport for London has agreed to undertake a detailed, up-to-date feasibility study on the work needed for step-free access at Putney Bridge station. It will also do studies for sixteen other stations.

This is the most hopeful moment for many years. Once the study has reported and the cost is clear, we’ll be pressing to get the funding. Thank you for all you’ve done to help us get to this point.

It’s an honour for me to work alongside so many residents, including the tremendous Fulham Disabled Supporters’ Association and more than 800 people who signed my petition. In my meetings with the Mayor of London and his team, being able to assure them of the community’s support for change has been essential.

I’ll keep you updated about the next steps to win this campaign for local residents and make Putney Bridge Station accessible for all.”
